In June 2025, Newsroom (New Zealand) ran an article about health risks associated with sexual choking.

This article will be useful to people engaging in, or considering engaging in sexual choking, as well as service providers and healthcare providers working with people engaging in, or are considering engaging in sexual choking.

It is written by a New Zealand academic and lecturer in criminology at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, Dr Samantha Keene. The article points to a Women’s Health NSW sexual choking health promotion resource to argue that providing accurate, non-judgmental information is key to people making informed decisions about the type of sex they engage in.
