This resource is for service providers and healthcare providers who want to take a health promotion approach to address sexual choking. By taking a health promotion approach to sexual choking, and focusing on improving health literacy and strengthening capability, we can we can equip people with the information they need to find ways to lower the risk of serious consequences and support their long-term health.

This resource sets out eight evidence-based ways to approach health promotion with different audiences of people who engage in, or who may be considering engaging in, sexual choking. For each health promotion approach, it sets out audiences it might be useful for, supporting evidence and resources, and some examples from different sorts of practitioners. The resource is intended to help you formulate your own way of sharing evidence-based health promotion relating to sexual choking, with people who use your service. It is available in a digital format for online use, and as a printable booklet.

Health promotion for sexual choking will work best when delivered in conjunction with a referral pathway for sexual choking, as set out in the Women’s Health NSW Guidelines: Responding to non-fatal strangulation and sexual choking.
